NAC Welcomes Attorney General

On June 9, 2015, the clients and staff at the New American Center had the pleasure of hosting Massachusetts’ Attorney General, Maura Healey.
General Healey spent an hour at the New American Center, touring the facility and meeting with clients. She was welcomed with an introduction by NAC director, Natasha Soolkin, followed by a personal testimony from former client Mani Biswa.

Healey provided the NAC community with an uplifting speech about how she plans to refocus the mission of her office and her position. It is not easy for immigrants of other nations to resettle into a new life in the United States, and General Healey acknowledged this difficulty. She recognizes that immigrants often face discrimination, and are many times being taken advantage of due to their lack of fluent English and American cultural knowledge.

General Healey spoke of a newly-created community engagement division of her office that will specifically encompass refugee rights. It is her newly sought out mission to make sure that the rights of the refugee community are protected and upheld. It was a source of comfort for the clients at the New American Center to hear that there are people who are looking out for their well-being. Healey thanked the New American Center for their dedicated work of serving the refugee community, and once again made it known that she and her team are always there to help.
